What is the Munsell Color System?
Albert H. Munsell (1858-1918)
At the beginning of the 20th century, Professor Albert H Munsell brought clarity to color communication by establishing an orderly system for accurately identifying every color that exists. Munsell based his system on what he defined as ‘perceived equidistance,” the human visual system’s perception of color.
Munsell desired to create a “rational way to describe color” that would use clear decimal notation instead of a lot of color names that he considered “foolish” and “misleading.” His system, which he began in 1898 with the creation of his color sphere, or tree, saw its full expression with his publication, A Color Notation, in 1905. This work has been reprinted several times and is still a standard for colorimetry (the measuring of color).
Munsell modeled his system as an orb around whose equator runs a band of colors. The axis of the orb is a scale of neutral gray values with white as the north pole and black as the south pole. Extending horizontally from the axis at each gray value is a gradation of color progressing from neutral gray to full saturation. With these three defining aspects, thousands of colors are defined and Munsell named these aspects, or qualities, Hue, Value, and Chroma.
The Munsell System is recognized around the globe as the standard for color notation in the worlds of art, business, science, government, and education. It is the universal system for selecting, identifying, and controlling color—in short, the universal language of color communication.

Our Founder, Cindy Noelle Rodoni is a certified color analyst and consultant, energy and wellness practitioner embodying her holistic approach to life and transformational leadership.
Cindy’s journey began with an appreciation for unique design, artisan quality and beauty of nature. Growing up overlooking what is often referred to now as “Silcon Valley”, with an entrepreneur dad and fashionista mom set the stage for her interest in harmonizing environments in alignment with the beauty of the natural world in and all around us. Recognizing the power of alignment is essential when growing rapidly and after unexpected changes or traumatic events.
Cindy graduated with combined degrees in life science and fashion design/merchandising and a love for color, textiles, style, and artisan footwear. Over the years after working within the fashion industry (often behind the scenes) she has learned many of the inside secrets and with her fascination with color, textures, elements, and nature she has done extensive research and studied with many leaders. As a leader herself she also brings over 3 decades of experience strategically sourcing and transforming the supply chains of corporations around the globe. Her deep insights and entrepreneurial spirit empower all to save time, money, and can last a lifetime.
